Summer Solstice ritual to be performed at the seashore, among your tribe and anyone who is welcome.
Preface
All invited guests participate in the preparations: prepare offerings, collect herbs, clear the space; focus on the love and anticipation of the coming event. As is tradition in Poland, girls and women collect wormwood, while boys and men collect wood for the great bonfire.
Consecration of Time
3 x sound of horn
This is the Time of the Turning!
Come, Tribe, for the time has come
Bring birch and oak, water and fire
The Night is belittled by the almighty Sun
And the waters are blessed with young hearts' desire
Calling of the Quarters
Let there be peace in the East, where the Sun is born
Let there be peace in the South, where the Fire burst
Let there be peace in the West, where the Kindred rejoices
Let there be peace in the North, where the Stars dance
Wardens of Space and Time, grant peace to our Grove.
Casting the Circle
I cleanse this Grove and all that it holds with Air [walk around the circle clockwise and purify it with the scent and fumes of burning wormwood]
I cleanse this Grove and all that it holds with Fire [light torches around the circle, clockwise]
I cleanse this Grove and all that it holds with Water [sprinkle sea water using oak and birch leaves]
I cleanse this Grove and all that it holds with Earth [take handful of salt and sprinkle it around the circle, clockwise]
Let us join hands, and hearts, and stand tall, and smile
Behold, the shortest of Nights bears witness to the glory of the Sun!
Invocation
Hear me! Oh, glorious Sun, giver of all life!
Hear me! Oh, Tribe of the Summer Lands!
Hear me! Oh, Spirits of Waters, Land and Air!
[face South, where the heart of summer has its seat]
I summon the ever burning fires of the South, to cleanse and bless all water,
I summon the Tribe of the Summer Lands, to join us in our happiest hour, rejoice and join in dance,
I summon the life-giving and victorious lights of the Sun, to bring love and hope ino the heart of each one of us, to inspire a lust for things good, pure and true.
Glorious Sun, as you scare away the shades of the Night, only allowing them to stay for as long as we wish and celebrate your life-giving powers, we rejoice and set all our passion free. The world is filled with the laughter of children, the deep breath of young lovers and made stronger with bonds of friendship and alliance, renewed on this night, as your holy fires banish all the demons out of the waters. Tonight, we shall swim safely in the seas and rivers, and sprinkle blessed water in our homes. Together, our wounds are now healed, and we are in the prime of the year, the time of our lives. All things fall in place, and skill, courage and loyalty are now rewarded, under the green leaves of the steadfast Oak.
[Turn towards center of the circle to light the holy Kupala Fires - a representation of the Sun on the shortest of nights; the bonfire is magnificent and awe-inspiring]
With this, we praise the Great Sun in its strongest hour! Behold!
This, we offer - to the Gods [offer the festive bread into the fire] - most of all to be honoured at Summer Solstice is the Sun who Rules All, and the shining god Lugh, whose skills and talents reflect the perfection of sunlight - grant us, oh Life-Giver, and Master of All Trades, the perfection, strength and ability we need to flourish and protect our tribe throughout the year. And most of all to be worshipped at Summer Solstice, is the Great White Mare - grant us, oh Mother of Plenty, your strength, passion and love so that we find a companion to celebrate life on this shortest of nights.
This, we offer - to the Tribe [pour mead into the fire] - to honour all of our Ancestors, throughout mankind, who honoured the Sun on the night of its glory, and by celebrating love and loyalty on the shortest of nights, teach us about the power of community.
This, we offer - to the Spirits of Summer [place bowl with nuts and buckwheat near the fire, to be scattered for the sea-shore creatures during the feast] - grant us, Sidhe, your kind companionship and protection, let us feast tonight as kin, in honour of our beloved Sun.
[after offerings have been made, anyone who wishes may take his or her chances at jumping over the sacred Fires of Kupala, for blessings and as a symbol of freedom]
Behold, the Sun has blessed the Waters! Bless, oh Divine Voyager, these birch and oak leaves, that grow on the Tree of Life. May your rays shine in the wreaths made tonight from these leaves, as lovers join and the tribe rejoices.
[meditation, accepting the blessings, using the power; thanks to the Gods, Ancestors and Spirits]
Deconsecration of Time and Space [feast begins]
Final benediction: Awen.
End.
